Jennifer Lea Lampton has been building websites since 1997, and participating in open-source web communities since 2006. She maintains several open source projects, and contributes reviews, reports, and fixes to many other projects as it relates to the needs of her work.

Jen is a very active member in the Drupal community. Not only does she contribute code, but she heps foster community too. Jen has served as one of the lead organizers for the largest free Drupal event in the world, the Bay Area Drupal Camp (also known as BADCamp) since 2007.

After spending several years developing course material and teaching hundreds of people how to use the Drupal software, Jen's primary focus became making software easier to use ("usability") and easier to learn ("learnability").

In an attempt to make Drupal 8 easier to learn, Jen spent almost 2 years as a Drupal core initiative lead for Drupal 8. There she helped wrangle a ton of other contributors get the modern template engine Twig into Drupal 8 core.

Even with Twig in core, Jen noticed that the rest of Drupal was continuing to shift away from the grasps of the average web developer. Together with Nate "quicksketch" Haug, Jen has become one of the Co-Founders behind Backdrop CMS.

There’s a cost that comes with change, and not all of the Drupal community will be able to afford jump to Drupal 8. Backdrop stands between Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 including features comparable to Drupal 8, but with the familiar code style of Drupal 7. Backdrop also removes some complexity that only benefited the 1%, making the system easier to learn, easier to use, and also more performant for the 99%.

As Drupal 8 moves towards the enterprise and away from the low end of the market, Backdrop emerges for the small to medium sized businesses and non-profits. With a focus on usability and performance, Backdrop aims to fill the widening gap between Drupal and WordPress.
