Lightning API provides a standard API with authentication and authorization that allows for easy ingestion of content by other applications.

Lightning Layout provides modules and configuration for great layout authoring experiences. It uses core's Layout Builder to enable a drag-and-drop experience when laying out pages.

Lightning Media provides modules and configuration for great media authoring experiences.

Lightning Core provides shared base functionality and APIs for other Lightning modules. You probably won't have a reason to install it unless another module requires this one.
