My friend love to make a news portal but he doesn't have much information about web developing. He heard drupal cms what is the purpose of it and can he design his website using drupal plz explain

I am experienced web developer but new to drupal, our team would like to build a website, similar to zaarly . com, which has following elements:

1. User management (Drupal has it)
2. Post item for sale, them other uers can click this item, and contact the seller. (I dont really want ecommerce, the transaction will be offline)
3. Pop-up form when registering (jQuery? How to do it?)
4. google map integration, which has location info of the item....

In my new role, I've inherited a bespoke web application running on Solaris and Oracle. It is basically a repository of articles that we have published over the past 7 years and allows registered users access to browse that repository.

I need to port this to an alternative platform as the equipment is ageing and there is no need to stick with Oracle. The ease of sticking is far outweighed by the cost of the licensing.

It appears to me that a CMS would be a perfectly sensible home for this site. From looking around and trying a few, my favourite is Drupal.

I just started DRUPAL, can anybody suggest me a best book for drupal.

Is drupal version 7 the standard download and not version 6?
