College of NJ Student Government needs your help!

Hey everyone!

My name is Sheil Naik, and I'm the Senator of Business, Parliamentarian, and Webmaster for the College of New Jersey Student Government Association. Our organization is currently in the process of redesigning our website (view our current site at http://www.tcnj.edu/~sga). After looking at numerous solutions for how to organize our website and allow for user control, Drupal seemed to be our best option. Our college currently offers Drupal as a hosting platform, but because of some complicated administration politics (the only person with authorization to create Drupal accounts is the head of IT, and he's currently too busy with more important projects), we won't be able to set up a Drupal-based website for a few more months.

Host Transfer and Overall Host Question

Question on Moving Hosts:
If moving from one host to another and both use Cpanel, can I just do a direct download of the .gz for the mysql db's and the home directory from one site's backup and then upload it onto the other site's backup? Would there be any other configuration (other than editing the domain name pointers) that I'd need to do?

Fast shared hosting?

Hey,
Can anyone recommend some shared hosting that is also fast? I'm not talking about bandwidth, but whatever aspects are involved in the course of processing AJAX calls. Not only is Drupal a demanding CMS, but my project will particularly require many AJAX calls.
It seems that nowadays, shared hosting companies are cheap and offer literally hundreds of gigabytes of hosting. But I have no way to tell how fast they are.

sub-$2/month hosting?

I have been using a hosting company for my basic html/php sites for 2 years now at $18/year and I have actually been quite happy with the hosting and of course the price. I just registered a new domain and I can use my existing company but I'm also interested in branching out to try other hosts. My philosophy is even if the hosting is not the greatest I can always switch hosts later *if* my needs require it. Of course, I want it to run Drupal.

Anyone have any experience with any hosting companies offering plans below $2USD per month?

2008 Hosting Evaluations and Recommendations

Welcome to the 2008 Hosting Evaluations and Recommendations Thread!

As has been tradition for a few years now, this is the thread to post your recommendations and experiences with Drupal hosts.

Before taking the advice of some random stranger, there are a few things to consider:

  1. How long has the person been active in the Drupal community? Are they a new account making their first post, or a seasoned developer with real experience?
  2. Do they actually have any Drupal sites running on the host in question? How long have the sites been hosted there?

And here are just a few of the things you should look for in a host:

  1. Speed! Specifically, database speed. Just logging into Drupal requires over 100 database queries, so SQL performance is critical.
  2. Reliability: If your site is down, you're losing business. Can the host handle your traffic?
  3. Shell Access (SSH): While not strictly necessary to install Drupal, having access to a command prompt will make your life much easier.
  4. PHP5 Support: Drupal 7 will require it, so if you plan on upgrading, make sure your host supports it.
