During the Drupal 7 release cycle we had two usability tests, one at the University of Minnesota and one at the University of Baltimore. These tests helped us understand the fundamental issues that Drupal site-builders face and set the direction for many of the major usability improvements in Drupal 7. These tests also triggered a cultural shift within the Drupal contributor community: we now consider user experience design a top priority in all major development efforts.
As the next step in this effort, we are running new usability tests to inform Drupal 8 development!
From May 17-19, the University of Minnesota has once again offered to host a formal usability test in their lab facilities, this time targeting Drupal 8 (as well as Drupal 7 contrib). These tests will give us the chance to see how far we’ve come in solving issues we identified previously. They will also give us a chance to evaluate the new interfaces and tools we added to Drupal 7 core, including the Overlay, Contextual Links, and Toolbar modules.
We are looking to move into web development and as we use drupal for our own site and see the benefits, we would like to start in that direction.
As a very small UK company with a very small budget to match we'd be looking for the most cash efficient way to get someone so we are considering a junior developer or even someone with just the knowledge but no experience.
From experience, what would a reasonable rate of pay be for someone like this? Are there better options for us?
Ok, I've been programming for about a year and have a pretty good set of skills for that amount of experience. I have a good understanding of OO Programming and Model View Control, etc. I can code in PHP, JS, MySQL, HTML, CSS, etc so I have enough skills to mess with everything Drupal runs off of. But here's what I would like to do with Drupal and I know it's POSSIBLE, but I want to know how I'd go about doing so CORRECTLY and if Drupal is right for me but I need some peeps with Drupal experience to come to the rescue XD
Site Idea:
Website for someone starting a business in restaurant marketing. They sell marketing packages to restaurants that include advertisement, restaurant reviews etc for each of the participating locations. The setup is based on Projects*. Each project has 10-15 participating restaurants and when you hit the site as a card-bearing user, you would see general promos for featured locations around you etc but also a look-up for nearby projects based on city, state etc (Probably a Google Maps Pin Setup). Each restaurant has a profile that will be activated by the manager on which they can display their current discounts and info.
