Webhosting: Which is more important — DB on same server or host's proximity to most of your users

I'd love to hear the thoughts of webmasters who have experience with relatively high-traffic websites (the upper limit of our start-up projections are around the 200gig/month mark for bandwidth).

I'm at the stage of selecting a webhost, and I don't know which attribute is more important:

  • Having a webhost less than 10 miles away from about 90 percent of the anticipated users for this website that has only an extremely localized appeal, or
  • Having a webhost that stores the databases on the same server as the website that uses them.

I have found a webhost company that has a extremely good, 13-year track record. Better yet, it is less than 10 miles away from practically all of our expected users. The only possible drawback is that it stores its databases on a separate server than the sites. Given Drupal's DB-intensive reputation, I wonder if this should be a cause for concern (as I've seen pointed out on some Drupal hosting discussions).

I also have found a couple of reputable options that have the databases stored on the same server as the site. However, to date, the ones I've found that seem to fit best with our plans are on the West Coast (California and Washington states); nearly all of our visitors are expected to come from a state on the eastern seaboard.

User rights + individualised file lists

Hi guys,

I've previously designed a few Joomla sites but have run into an architecture issue with it for this project so have started looking further afield - ie Drupal :) My skills; mainly hacking existing code at a beginner-mid level. I'm aware I'm in for a learning curve if I go for Drupal.

Scenario I'm trying to achieve is to allow a user to register, pay a subscription and then have access to their own download/document list so long as the subscription is valid. They can't see anyone else's and no one else can see theirs. Downloads are individual (ie, not products, each download/document will be different, so it's more document management than a storefront). If you are a windows user you could like it to a 'My Documents' folder for yourself only.

Does Drupal allow two layers of user registration; 1 to manage 'registered' users (who I charge a subscription to which allows access to their own files), but then I also need another layer customised to the particular user that controls access to the download/document list? Or is there an alternate way of looking at it in Drupal?

I don't think Joomla can give me this second layer or individualised permissions - can Drupal?

So basic requirements that Drupal / it's modules needs to meet;

1) Secure, private document/file list protected by logon
2) Recurring billing / credit card module

Something like google calendar. Is it possible?

Hi!

An important part of the Intranet that I'm developing are calendars. I need to have different calendars (ex: meetings, holidays...), but I must be able to select both together to see all events at the same time. I'd be nice to create events clicking at the day of the event. And more.
I think that I need a google calendar for my Drupal 6x... Is it possible?

Thanks!

New Noob Newbie

Hi there, as you can imagine from the title it's my first time with Drupal.

But not only, it's also my first time with Apache, MySQL, PHP.
Luckily, it's not my first time on a PC. I am working with computers since 30 years. I coded but mostly I work on graphics. I also produced a couple of websites in the past times.

But now I decided to learn to make webapps.
I managed to install successfully XAMPP on my computer (not without some trouble...) and now I must install Drupal.

As the servers are all already installed, what should I do now?

Unique Situation- but I bet ya got someting that works!

Hello- I am webmaster for a group of Horsepeople from the Canal Zone, Panama. I originally started with a site with a few people on one list and a few horses and photos on another. However, I find that my fond memories of the now extinct Canal Zone are shared by many and the list of people and horses is getting complex.

here are the early lists- I have tons more to add tho
