Before you start

I'm currently leaning heavily towards using Drupal for a new site I'm going to start working on. I've had the idea and the domain for this site for a long time, and after recently helping my wife set up a really slick little Joomla site for her small business, I was re-invigorated and want to get to work on my site ASAP. Joomla is decent for a plug and play solution, but I can already see for my purposes that it won't do what I need. I have a lengthy background as a Windows developer (VB/ASP/C#/.NET/MSSQL) but really don't know anything about PHP other than the few tweaks or bugs I've had to fix in Joomla modules I've downloaded. Drupal looks like it fits the bill, I can get the site up and running and ease into PHP if there's any heavy lifting to be done later.

Anyway, onto the meat of my question. I've been reading about CCK and how it's moving to the core for Drupal 7, but it looks like there will be changes to the way CCK data is handled. Based on what I'm reading, my site will likely depend heavily on the CCK and custom data types. I'm not sure exactly how it's all going to fit together in the Drupal framework yet, but there will multiple primary types of nodes which will be set up hierarchically and can all have polls and comments and such attached to them.

Okay so I am in the process of developing a Game Creation Competition Website. Users will submit there games to the competition through the site where other users can download and rate their games. Me and other admin's of the site will also play the games and judge them. The winners will be given prizes and such. I was wondering is this possible and can you provide me with resources to help me develop this site?

I have a pretty big project I am trying to undertake here in Philadelphia --- Create a news/guide website by the name www.InspireMePhilly.com --- Its just an idea a few friends and I have decided to do. We have great ideas and great stories we really want to show the world.

We are all amateur, have experience with building static sites and utilizing some cms, but no experience with Drupal. I have been reading a ton of drupal tutorials to get a game plan set up for creating the news portion of the website. The guide can wait for another day. But the news, i imagine, should be straight forward.

My question to you is ... "If I want to create a news website that an author can come in, write their story, fill out all the proper fields, press enter, then have their story populate to the front page, to a specific section in the site, etc, what should be my game plan?" I dont need a tutorial. I just need help finding the right path. All these modules and other drupal news sites seem overwhelming to me.

So I want to build a news website. I got Drupal 6, have learned some drupal basics. What modules, etc should I get, learn, and utilize? Oh great Drupal Head, please tell me what path I should venture.

I am brand new here and hope I am not posting in the wrong place. Please forgive me if I am.
I am a (just starting out) photographer and would like to make a website. I am new to Drupal but found a website that I like. But I do not know how to figure out how it was made, as in what modules were used to create it with.

I did not see a link to the web creator so I could not ask them directly or try to hire them.
