Before you start

I am a happy EE (Expression Engine) user but am checking out Drupal. I am building a certain kind of cms for a non profit. I am able to put most of what I want together using EE and the various modules but not quite everything. EE just came out with a new version. One of the things that we like about the new EE is it has a very slick and easy to use back end interface. There are also some extensions that make it easier yet to create a page that then shows up in the navigation. They also make good use of some jQuery effects (some drag and drop, etc) in the right places - not showy, just enhanced functionality.

It is important that we be able to present to our customers a very easy to use, intuitive interface that has all the things that are unnecessary to them stripped away. The backend also needs to look very clean and uncluttered. I tried out Drupal (like version 4) quite some time ago and did not have the inclination to do the kind of work it would take to clean the interface and learn Drupal. Too much programming and too cluttered interface - I just wanted to get stated with something and get me feet wet. Now my situation is quite different and I am interested in doing some deeper work.

I'm interested in moving my club site to Drupal. I've searched for various modules that I may require (classified ads and events) but I can't find previews/demonstrations for them (or anything else much). Is the "done thing" to install them on a test site and try them out or is there something I'm missing? Is there a way of seeing them in action beforehand?

Just wondering if its a good choice to take drupal 7 for developing Auction based website. I am in a very strict deadline and would get just 35 working days for it. I am not provided any requirement documentation. That's a headache; but they have provided me an existing auction site of their own, which needs to be converted to well form. Previous freelancer was a little nervy one and had spoiled it big time.
