is Drupal appropriate?

Hi there,

I'm volunteering for a non-profit, helping them set up their first information management system. Here's what they're looking for:

1. Donor Management
2. Client Management
3. Volunteer Management
4. Project Management (not that important)

Right now, there's not even an Excel file for most of this information. They are a small non-profit, with basically no overhead budget (all the staff personally fundraise for their own salaries). They are very low-tech and need something quite simple. And I'll be honest, I'm not very tech-minded myself.

Is this a problem with Drupal?

I belong to a bike club, sbraweb.org, and our web site is written in Drupal. We have around 800 members. The site is painfully slow. I takes 17 seconds for the site to come up, and 12 seconds to go to a typical page like "recent posts."

We have been told the site is slow because of a problem with our web hosting company, they don't have expertise in Drupal, etc. But I wonder if it isn't simply the way the site was built (by a non-expert web programmer).

Caching for every user

I also want to use caching for this purpose so the data on their frontpage refresh every 3 hours let's say instead of each visit.

I am using the following function to achieve this:
