webhost account advice

I'm looking for webhost advice. Not so much about *which* webhost, although suggestions are welcome.
But which kind of account I should be aiming for and how much it should cost.

I'm building two school websites as a multisite set-up (two separate sites because we have two annexes). I'm currently developing the site on a shared business account, but I'm worried what will happen when I go live and have 30 - 100 users accessing the site simultaneously:

1)
The sites will be used daily by 30 staff and 600 students, with 1200 parents viewing less regularly as guests.

2)
The content will mostly be text, images and document uploads/downloads, with 1%-3% of the nodes containing short audio/video streams of uploaded swf/flv/mp3.

3)
I'm using most of the optional core modules, and about 10 additional small, light modules, plus the more usual heavy-weights, like i18n, CCK, IMCE, FCKEditor, SWFtools (or JqueryMedia), Webform, Hierarchical Select, Views2, Quicktabs, etc.

4)
Using the IMCE module, I am hoping to give teachers 100mb of file space each, and 10mb to each of the older students. I'd feel most comfortable having 10-15gb of disk space. I can go lower though, down to about 8gb.

5)

1&1 UK mySQL5 connection using socket

I am currently having trouble connecting my site to the database. I created the site on a dreamhost server, but the client would like it hosted on 1&1. So I moved it all across. The files are there fine, and if I connect to my dreamhost server, it all connects just fine, as soon as I attempt to connect to the DB on 1&1 I get a site offline error with:

The mysqli error was: Can't connect to MySQL server on '127.0.0.1' (111).

Host Gator & Host Monster

Hi there,

I'm looking at putting my site online at the moment. Host Gator and Host Monster both seem to receive good press, although I've seen reports of problems relating to Clean URLs. Does anyone have any recommendations with respect to my final choice - good, bad experiences?

Intrestingly Host Monster will give me a free domain name. This sounds great, but I'm wondering whether this domain will actually be mine should I come to leave them for example. They don't mention renewal fees for the domain name either...is it mine forever in that case?

Looking for a Host that can handle Drupal maxed-out to the nines!

What up everybody! I am having a hosting issue and I need some professional advice. I have a client who is using many Drupal 5 modules, themes and basically has a very memory intensive site. I am finding that I have to have my php.ini file set to 36MB as the max memory for execution of scripts - their hosting company I believe will only let me get to 24MB. Unfortunately, this is still too little - which kind of freaks me out a little. I seem to bee 12MB shy of what is required to make the site work.

This particular Drupal 5 install is pretty typical it seems though, it uses a lot of modules running concurrently. It runs on my dev machine great. So, I need reliable hosting that can handle the memory usage - budget is a concern, so they can't necessarily buy their own server, or run their own domain from their personal LAN, but they can afford better hosting. Perhaps even a dedicated server.

If anyone can give relevant advice on a good US based hosting service (that is a requirement, they are non-profit and their Grants dictate a US based company), that has good customer service (preferably 24/7/365) 99% uptime and a lot of bandwidth to spare I would be eternally grateful!

OR,

freedns.afraid.org Secondary DNS Support?

Hi there,

I want to use a free subdomain through freedns.afraid.org. But when I create a new "NS" subdomain, it only lets me add one nameserver. I would also like to add the secondary DNS of my webhost. Anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks a lot!
