cron runs in browser but gets syntax errors in cronjob (1and1 hosting)

I created a Drupal site for a customer on 1and1 hosting and never ran into so many problems. Finally got the site to show its face and do its thing ... and now can't get cron to work. 1and1 alternates between trying to help but not understanding the question (let alone the answer) ... and refusing to help at all.

I can run cron.php in the browser perfectly fine, and Drupal logs that it has run. When the cron job fires on a schedule, though, the server can't seem to figure out what to do with the code inside cron.php. It sends me an email full of errors that suggest it's not even recognizing cron as a PHP file:

/htdocs/cron.php: line 1: ?php: No such file or directory
/htdocs/cron.php: line 2: include_once: command not found
/htdocs/cron.php: line 3: syntax error near unexpected token `DRUPAL_BOOTSTRAP_FULL'
/htdocs/cron.php: line 3: `drupal_bootstrap(DRUPAL_BOOTSTRAP_FULL);'

When 1and1 was still trying to help, they created their own crontest.php file to prove the server was capable of running one, and that the error must be on our end. To test their file, they - you guessed it - opened it in a browser. No errors, so hey - it must work. Then they created a scheduled job for it .... and five minutes later, I got an email full of errors about *their* cron file.

Community site (lots of modules) hosting recommendation

Hello all-

We're getting ready to take a community website live with some complicated functionality in it (kind of a halfway marker between LinkedIn and Facebook for a targeted group) and I honestly can't anticipate the traffic load...we're going to be sending emails out to interested people and those are going to number in the thousands, so we're talking (hopefully) a high-traffic site.

With Performance logs (devel) turned on and no optimization in terms of CSS files or caching, we're running at an average of 28.1 MB per page, and an average of 2,414.72 milliseconds per page to load.

I can't really sacrifice the modules enabled without degrading the site functionality, and we'd actually like to expand the site's functionality in the future to additional capabilities.

Right now we're hosted on GoDaddy's Grid Hosting (https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/grid.asp) and it's been a nightmare for the site going down with connection issues. This is an issue with the service, not performance, so we need to switch. We already have other sites with Godaddy, so we want to stick with them for simplicity's sake, unless another place just has too good a deal to pass up.

I don't have any server management experience (CPanel only, really).

www.webhostingpad.com is cheating!

www.webhostingpad.com is cheating for sure!

Two of my accounts created there were for 3 years. In their cPanel I don't get any information. But, when I go through whois.com, surprisingly I ge get the info that my sites are registered for 1 year.

Why others didn't report this earlier?

Thanks,
JK

Question about using subdomain module on hotdrupal

First, I apologize if this is the wrong category to post this in so feel free to move it if needed.

We are currently using hotdrupal for our host (and they have been excellent!) and I happened to stumble upon the subdomain module, which looks like it would be an excellent addition to our new site.

So I was wondering if anybody has had any success using that module on hotdrupal? Normally something like that wouldn't work in a shared hosting environment.

Thanks.
