1&1, 1and1 hosting questions for newbies?

Hi there

I’m looking at buying hosting with 1and1 as my friend recommended them, he develops sites in PHP though he doesn’t develop in Drupal. A few people on here seem to use them with a few problems but they seem to have documented them. I have a few noob questions

As a new drupal user and first time web designer are there any “showstopper” reasons for not using 1and1?

Should I get the linux or windows hosting and what is the difference?

Cloud Hosting Question

Hey everyone. Quick question for you regarding cloud hosting. I have been using Cloud Servers to host a couple large web applications for the past year or so, and was thinking about moving 3-4 Drupal 6 sites I have into a Cloud hosting environment. I am very experienced with the server end of Cloud hosting, but have taken the easy way out up until now and hosted our Drupal sites with a virtual private server at 1and1.

Since our sites are very low traffic, and not very media intense it really doesn't make sense to throw them into the cloud, but I was wondering if maybe a few people out there might be interested in getting involved and putting our sites together on one nice cloud server? We are a small technology company located in Texas, and our expertise is Business Software Products, so this would not be just some guy wanting to share a hosting arrangement. We would need to discuss the entire project in detail, and assign responsibilities among the group we put together. Since we are not claiming to be Drupal experts it would be nice to have someone who knows Drupal in and out to help.

Some of the things to consider:

1. One Cloud server would only have one IP address, and therefore all sites would need to share this IP. If you are in a shared hosting environment you may well be sharing an IP address with hundreds of others all ready.

Just bought VPS - what should I set the PHP Memory Limit to?

Hi, there,

I just bought a Servint VPS with 768MB guaranteed RAM - what should I set the PHP Memory Limit to for best Drupal performance?

Thanks a lot,

PHP Safe Mode : ON

On my website there was an error in PHP Safe Mode in the status ON.

My host won't "Tune" MySQL as http://drupal.org/node/259580 Should I worry?

I have been with my hosting company (SurpassHosting) almost 10 years and have been _very_ impressed with every experience I have ever had, I have noticed the site down twice that I remember, both times there was an explanation sent out fairly quickly. (One time someone climbed the power pole outside the office and electrocuted himself. OUCH) When my ISP blocked port 25, they moved my email to port 26. They reply to my support tickets on Sunday within an hour! They don't close a support ticket until _I_ say it's complete! I could go on, but you get the point.
