Accessibility

Drupal is a highly accessible CMS, but it misses on several key points that need to be addressed. A lively conversation and stern commitment to accessibility needs to be fundamental to Drupal development.

I'm currently building a Multi Site Drupal for the office for equity and diversity at a large university (NDA effective...). I finished an accessibility audit with their accessibility expert today and he had the following to say regarding Drupal Accessibility:

... [T]here are some issues that make its use tedious, and other functions that require a more advanced knowledge of the JAWS screen reader.

Specifically, the issues that we discovered were:

  1. Lack of heading tags for functionality. Every major function should be labeled with an appropriately leveled heading tag to ensure that screen reader users can easily navigate to useful fields. (An example of where Drupal fails on this is the in URL aliasing)
  2. Some buttons to not respond appropriately to Enter or Space keys. I'm looking at you "Upload" button for files and images in content editing pages.

A Good soultion for me?

Hey guys,

I'm currently searching for a KMS/DMS/CMS system for our archiving system. We are currently pulling files off the main file server (Widnows Share) and burning them to DVD's, then entering that info into a separate application so we can find whats on what DVD. I'm looking to store everything on live storage instead but want to use a CMS/DMS system because of the integrated database, and the ability to tag files/folders for easy document retrieval.
