drupal and subdomains, drupal and select multiblogs

Hi,

First day investigating drupal and just some basic questions for now to kickstart my learning curve while I continue to try and wrap my head around it all.

How would drupal resolve subdomains? I currently use WordpressMU with wildcard subdomains - does Drupal do something similar or the same?

I see that there is a multi blog option for users like MU - But can I disable users being able to create a blog so that only admin can create a blog.

cheers,
M.

Will Drupal offer the following functionality? Which version?

I am considering using Drupal for a new site which will be used as the official website for a medium-sized southern city (like Memphis, Little Rock, Nashville). I would like to know if Drupal and it's modules will be able to deliver the type of functionality I will need. Also, I will need to know which version to start off with to give me the most options for modules now and in the future. Modules I will need will cover the following:

Mail list manager within Drupal - is this possible?

Hi,

I have been evaluating various mailing list modules and searching for a mail-list solution in Drupal that does more-or-less the following:

* The list basically mimics mailman functionality entirely within Drupal.
* New users register with the (Drupal) site and elect to join the mailing list.
* Any new message sent to the mailing list (via email) is intercepted by the module and is published as a new node on the site.
* Any reply to an existing topic on the mailing list (via email) is intercepted by the module and is published as a comment to the appropiate existing node.
* Any new node (depending upon taxonomy item or possibly node type) is sent to the mailing list.
* Any new comment to an existing node is sent to the mailing list.
* Users subscribe / unsubscribe to the mailing list similar to the existing Drupal mailing list implementations.
* Ideally there should be a type of selection matrix (similar to access control - /admin/user/access) that allows control over the various node and comment options that are published to the mailing list.
* In due course multiple mailing lists may be required, but for now a single mailing list per site would suffice.
* In order to keep the performance level of the server within acceptable levels, the number of emails sent per hour must be configurable ie 200 mails per hour.

Can Drupal Do This?

I've spent weeks so far trying to come up with a CMS that will support my requirements. Requirements that seemed to me to be fairly simple. I've tried several systems so far and Plone seems to be the closest fit, but it seems so cumbersome to work with.

Can Drupal handle my simple intranet site with these requirements?

1. I want login access to view content
2. I want only content pages, sub pages, menus, sub menus and files (keep it simple)
3. I want page and menu visibility to be controlled by user group or role
4. I want page creation, update, file creation, update to be controlled by user group or role

Sounds pretty simple to me. Maybe I'm looking for the wrong type of tool? Any assistance would be appreciated. Now if you're interested in what I'm doing, I'll give a real world example below.

I want a company intranet site (internal only)
I want a selection (menu) for each company function (HR, IT, FINANCE...)
I want each department to be able to manage their own section and not be able to muck with anybody elses section; I'm dealing with some non-techies so it's got to be easy to create pages and upload files.
I want unauthenticated users not to be able to do anything but login, and the authenticated users will probably be allowed to read/download anything (but if some content could be restricted -- great!)

Orkut like SNS possible?

Hi,
I am planning to start a Orkut, Friendster like SNS. Is Drupal a viable option for the same?
