I'm quite sure it is possible but I'm not sure how ...
I want to give roles to users when they go threw the registering with a ldap database. I will find some informations inside the ldap that will help me doing this. I saw there is a ldap module but I don't want to use the ldap database to login. I just want some informations inside to give roles to users.
Is it possible ? Can someone help me doing this ? I'm not a very good php dev (but i can do some small things with php).
Please help me.

I'm a front end web developer and usually work with programmers to create the more complex aplications usually with a custom built CMS. I am taking on a freelance project and want to find a CMS that I can use to quickly get a site up and have some fairly complex functionality. I usually use Wordpress but I think we all know its not really a full CMS. The thing I like about it is the ease of skinning the templates with my own html and CSS. The thing I am discouraged about Drupal is all the Block stuff.
I have just read about drupal being (the first?) cms with integrated community features.
I am currently using joomla but want to start a new site with the following features:
- profile of users with the ability to enter "the typical" things like name, hobbies, birth date, picture...
at best it would be to be able to configure custom fields without the need to really programm them. Just like a web based config tool (click&play)
- rating features: e.g. recommendation for a bar or a hotel.
