Is Drupal a viable solution for my website? Please review What is Drupal before posting.

New to Drupal, should I use v5 or v6?

I've been exploring Drupal 6.1 and it looks really good for my project site which will allow authenticated users to upload audio files. There will also be some tools for working with these files (written in java), areas for discussion, comments, personal pages, equipment reviews and so forth.

Dreamhost CGI problems

Hey, when I upload all th Drupal 6.1 files and then go to my directory it redirects to /cgi-system/install.php and I get a 404 error. How can I fix this?

how to decide between drupal and Ruby on Rails for social site?

I don't know as much about ruby on rails. I was wondering what some of the advantages might be over drupal. I am starting from scratch so it is a possiblity for me.

How would developing a social site on RoR, for example blogs, forums, friends, groups, RSS feeds compare cost wise?

If I developed the initial site in drupal, could I make additions/upgrades using RoR afterwards? Or would I have to start over from stratch?

Thanks,
Dave

Programming Knoledge, Dealbreaker?

Hi,

I'm another one of the newbies. I am a web DESIGNER fluent in xHTML and CSS. However, I know absolutely NO PHP or MySQL. I'm interested in being able to create websites with some of the most common dynamic functionalities such as the following:

Professional Association Local Chapter Site - Job board, Mass mailing, event management, chapter news, etc

Hello,

We would like to revamp our local chapter site and I'm seriously considering using Drupal.

I looked at CiviCRM and it looks like a perfect solution in terms of functionality but I do have some reservations as it is a separate system and only integrated with Drupal. Is this warranted or is CiviCRM really all it says it is?

Possible permissions issues I dont know.....

Ok, I got PHP to work I went through the tutorial on Peterguy's site and ran the entire gauntlet of settings. Then I did the php test from command prompt and got an error message initially regarding the browscap file it was the wrong version so I downloaded "php_browscap.ini' re-ran from the command prompt in php directory and no errors.

MySQL, went through the brief instructions on "Drupal 5 Getting Started" but found the instructions lacking and some of the commands are old and dont work on v5.0 so I downloaded an article from mySQL called "Getting Started with MySQL" this had the newer commands and other commands that came in handy.

The GRANT and CREATE commands were run with there corresponding parameters.

Finally, as a precautionary measure before running the "install.php", I'm very pesimistic, I created another test web-site on the same machine with one file called "odin.php" and for the past day and half can understand why I get the following error message. I also tried it on the "install.php" in my drupal5 website and got the same thing.

I have checked and investigated all my perms read articles 318380 and 812614 on Microsoft site. As far as I can tell perms are "ok".

-Win2k3 latest updates
-PHP 5
-Drupal 5.7
-MySQL 5.*
