Im looking into building a website for a local youth centre. The centre holds weekly fund raising events such as live music, etc. The aim is that perfomers can create the own profiles on the website so people can see what upcoming events are happening. The user created profiles would make up the most of the website.
I am not a developer, but I am in the process of shopping around for someone to build me a website. But before I find a developer, I am trying to educate myself a little.
In looking at different CMS's, I have come across Drupal, Elgg and Joomla, all of which seem to be some of the more popular and widely used and supported CMS out there.
So what I want to know is how is Drupal different from the others? How does it compare to the other CMS's. Are there certain areas where Drupal excels over the others, and areas where it may fall short?
I am a photographer. I deliver all my work digitally with my website. I create photo galleries with an app called iView that is no longer made (megalomaniacal corporation killed it) and am looking for a CMS to replace it. I can now publish galleries that give me a page of thumbnails and a media page, which can be either a screen resolution or ultra-high print resolution image. This is useful to me, because photo editors can download my high res files for publication.

Well, I was asked to create a website for an english course here in my city. The site must have a database, in which teachers and students will be able to login in order to see its private content. Teachers will have to fill in their class plans, write reports on students, update their total of hours given and stuff like that... Students will have to login in order to ask questions, doubts, read their teacher's reports, print their monthly bills, etc. Probably a single user won't be able to read/see other user's info, example: student A can't read/see student B reports/grades, etc...
