Before you start

Hi All,

I'm very keen on learning and implementing drupal. I'm a complete newcomer in the field of web development and hosting so I've absolutely no idea about how it works. I want to start learning and working on drupal. My first query is how do I use drupal. As in can I install drupal on my desktop or I need a web host for it? and post installation, can I work on drupal simply on my desktop accesiing the web host, or do I need to be present physically on the host everytime. I know my queries are really silly, but any help would be much appreciated.

I'm a long time WordPress developer but I've been wanting to work with Drupal, as well. I have a client that prefers their new site be built with Drupal so it's great timing. Before I start, however, I do have a question. Does Drupal offer an auto-update feature for new releases and security updates? WordPress has an auto-update feature that works very well.

I looked through the Drupal documentation before asking but was unable to find anything.

I am thinking of using Drupal for a website shopping cart? I looked at Magento and several others but feel that Drupal has better support.
Are there any obvious disadvantages to using Ubercart and Drupal? I know that Drupal and Ubercart are Open Source but price is not the biggest factor. If you had 600$ to spend on a shopping cart would you use Drupal and invest it elsewhere? or is there a certain cart you might recommend? Thank You so much!

I have a client I am developing an e-commerce site for. Some basics: I am working with D7, and have settled on Drupal Commerce as the core e-commerce module. Views, of course, is another big contributor so far, and I plan to leverage it as much as possible to get what I am after, if possible.

So what I need is a somewhat custom "Add to Cart" form. Ideally, my client would like something that (roughly) replicates the spreadsheets his customers currently use to fill in their orders. Let me give an example to demonstrate, in the form of a table:

I am responsible to select a best drupal solution for my spiritual organization. I am pretty new to drupal but not to CMS. I have working experience with wp & joomla.

Our basic organization structure is 1. Headquarters(just one) 2. Temples(50+) 3. Centers(200+) .. Primary functionality I am looking for is creating multiple websites (for each temple & center) ... All temples need one type of functionality & all centers need to have one type of functionality and main head quarters need different functionality.
