Developement-transition of Drupal Commons from D6 to D7: how to react as a user

Hello dear buddies, hello dear friends

i am brandnew to Drupal and to Commons too. At the moment i am planning the design of a Commons-Site. I do not have launched a live site - i just am iroining out the concepts and do some work behind the scenes - on a lampp on my Linux-box. This should accentuate the situation i am in.

On the other handside there is the dramatic change in development: Drupal-commons is right in the mids of a transition from D6 to D7 see http://groups.drupal.org/node/210038

i think that i (we and that means all novices that are planning a launch) should focus on d7 now. And as i am new to Drual i need to have some insights and point of views from experts and some senior Drupal users.

From the user- point of view (that is in the pre-launch-phase)

Custom work in D6 and them moving it to D7 a few months later is silly.
and for development work extending Commons with additional Drupal functionality.
Limiting dev work with D6 modules and not embracing D7 modules is equally silly.

Where to start

Hi There,

I'm new to Drupal and would like to get into it.
Where should I start?

Basically I know PHP HTML and that is it.

Install a translation on a successive version

Can I install a translation for Drupal 7.11 in Drupal 7.12?

There are no problems if some sentences will not be translated.

Multiple users each belong to a account

I am considering using Drupal to rapidly prototype some ideas. I have three sub-domains and each will have it's own modules/db/themes however I wish to share the users table so authentication is only required once.

That being said, I want to add a custom content type "accounts" which will hold all of the companies that use software. The ID of each of these records should be added to every entity/content type used by each application.

This is so when user A or B or C login to any app - they see only the records/data applicable to them.

Does Drupal 7 have a good file management system module?

Hi all,

I would like to use Drupal 7 for a website but I need a good support for file management.

Is there a module to:

- upload files (for admins)
- show these files in a directories hierarchy (with public access for everyone) ?

I searched such a module but I find something only for Drupal 6. I also noticed that Drupal 7 has a default File module.

Can I achieve this result with Drupal 7?

Thank you
