Is Drupal a viable solution for my website? Please review What is Drupal before posting.

Is Drupal appropriate for this project?

Hello everyone,

This is a large post, so please bear with me.

Background: I am a software engineer by profession, but have little experience with web development. A short time ago I taught myself PHP, MySQL, jQuery, etc, and really enjoyed it. I've decided to spend a few months making a project, just for fun, and am trying to decide whether to just make it from scratch myself or use Drupal. I am not concerned with whether or not it already exists, or if anyone but my friends and I would use it, it's just for fun.

Project: My friends and I LOVE riddles. My bookmarks are filled with them and it's really getting out of hand. I want to make a site where people can login and add their own riddles/solutions. Users can browse each others' riddles and create lists of their favourites, which can also be shared between users. Simple, right? My first inclination was to just make it from scratch, using jQuery and PHP myself. However, a friend of mine suggested Drupal, and now I'm giving it serious thought. However, after getting a brief overview of Drupal (from docs and videos) it seems like it's built for content such as blog entries and comments... two things that would have no place in my site.

Drupal for my next project

Hello Everyone, trust you are all well.

I went thru the "Understanding Drupal" documentation and i must i really enjoyed reading it. The documentation has been well written therefore kudos to the drupal community.

i've worked with other CMSs before but I've enjoyed working with umbraco CMS, its a .NET Open Source CMS but for me its also a content management framework therefore when i read in documentation section about Drupal being a content management framework i became even more interested.

Anyway i would like to kindly ask for some advice regarding a solution which i need to create for one of my mates. basically i just need confirmation, i'm currently in the planning phase.

The solution is the following:

create a web application that will enable community driven activity. basically we have a province here in south africa and we would like to create a website that will allow the community to post areas of interest for this province. the structor will be the following:

Main Website - Province name (Limpopo)

main categories:

Top Spots (business, restaurants, hotels, bars), Classifieds (personal, buy & sell), Others (Later on add more catagories as the site grows bigger.)

DRUPAL 7 Newbie needs some advice

Hello, my name is Shelia. I am a long time software developer and my latest web site development was using .NET. Instead of developing the two new sites I am hired to do with .NET, I decided to use a CMS. I have checked out Drupal 7, Wordpress, and Joomla. I believe that Drupal will give me the best results and will be the easiest to add a few advanced features I will need. I have watched a few Beginners Tutorials to get the basics and I now feel comfortable to start my development. For the most part, I will be able to use Core and contributed modules to accomplish most of the web sites.
