Is Drupal a viable solution for my website? Please review What is Drupal before posting.

New to Drupal

We have books on maximum programming language or framework. Where people can go through a full step by step building process.

To Simplify, say 'Learn by Example' :)
I have not found any free books which may guide on drupal (:

Is Drupal good for file distribution?

I'm guessing I haven't got a reply to my first thread because I replied to it myself first. So I'm following up with this new thread to see if I can get an answer to this one:

How to retrieve table data from a specific table?

Hi I'm new to Drupal and I'm most interested in the webform and SQLSearch modules.

My general requirement is: I would like to run an SQL query against an arbitrary table. The user would specify filter criteria, and the module would create the SQL string and return the paginated results.

It appears these two modules will do this. Can someone please clarify:

webform question:
- Can the data be saved into an arbitrary table or is it fixed in the module?

Can Drupal support access to PDF's based on membership

Hi - I am looking to move our not for profit ( http://lymphology.asn.au ) from Mambo to Drupal. The only thing I am a bit stuck on is the fact I use DocMan in Mambo to limit access to certain documents - PDF's - based on them being a member of a group. Is there any module for Drupal that could do this. This is the only sticking point ot me moving to Drupal.

Spec'ing a server?

My ISP wants me to spec out the virtual server for my drupal application. Can anyone give me a feel for storage requirements? My nodes will have some text, an image or two, and a bunch of comments. I could end up with a thousand nodes or a hundred thousand nodes. What should I specify for storage?

Also is there anything like a checklist for a drupal server installation?

Thanks

Users & Pages

Hello,
I'm contemplating making the move to Drupal. Currently the website resides on Wordpress, which the former webmaster stupidly decided to use. (It has it's uses, however the website in question is not an appropriate use)

One of the pluses of Wordpress is that we are able to let certain users change certain pages. This website is a departmental website and we allow the faculty to have their own page within our website, where they can update what they are currently researching and so on.
