Still on Drupal 7? Security support for Drupal 7 ended on 5 January 2025. Please visit our Drupal 7 End of Life resources page to review all of your options.
I first started dabbling with Drupal last September/October time and Drupal 7 fell at the first hurdle (when it was still a beta version) so I switched to Drupal 6. I'm just now thinking of taking it up but wondering if I should start on Drupal 7 or is still buggy. I've made some progress with 6 version and been reading a good developers book on it so not sure. What do you developers put there do when a new version comes out- is there a good source on the internet which fills in the gaps or do you buy a revised editions of your books?
I have got a requirement from my client regarding a new website which will be a combined clone of amazon/ebay (auction/memberstores) and Elance. That is all the features of these websites incorporated in one single website.
Now, I am posed with the question - would it be worthwhile for me to build this website by creating custom drupal modules and theming ? Or is it better to learn a framework like zend or yii or symfony and use it in building the website. The main factors that are concerning me very much are -
1.Can Drupal take the high traffic/load that ebay/amazon can withstand ? If TRUE - will it be a painful process - in respect to time and effort (learning) compared to using a PHP framework like Zend or Yii or Symfony ? Which path will give me the required stability in least time ?
2.I am sure that high traffic websites like ebay/amazon run on multiple servers to distribute the traffic load. Can Drupal be configured
to work on multiple servers like those of ebay/amazon ? We will be using Amazon EC2 cloud servers (Ubuntu Linux) for deployment.
Is this a painstaking process compared to Zend/Yii/Symfony powered websites ?
3. Performance - Are PHP framework powered websites faster than Drupal ? Or will they produce the same results provided I use caching mechanism built within Drupal.
For Drupal users also running CiviCRM - and in particular for those who are responsible for the smooth and secure operation of the services on their web site - there is a discussion thread that may be of interest at http://civicrm.org/blogs/sschmoller/civicrm-needs-work-securely-drupal-6.... It concerns the currently rather-too-soon-for-comfort ceasing of security patches and critical bug fixes for the CiviCRM for Drupal 6.
Would it make sense to create a system like Area 51 on StackExchange -- a three phase process for module development? The first phase would be the submission of an idea to develop a module or add features to an existing module. Then users can discuss the project and pledge funds or time to develop it. The second phase would be a continuation of the discussion along with actually collecting the funds for the project through PayPal, ChipIn or some other means. The third phase would actually be building the project.
I'm fairly new in the enterprise IT world (not new to IT, though) and I'm working at a company that has a very rudimentary file storage system. I'll need to lay out the basic structure first.
