Installing Drupal

I have installed Drupal 6 and 7 on Hostmonster previously without issue. I would like to install a Drupal 8.1.0 site but keep getting a blank screen when I navigate to the website in my browser. I think it has something to do with PHP but I don't know what to fix. Here are the error messages I get:

[29-Apr-2016 07:02:44] PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '[' in /core/install.php on line 31

On Win7-64, and with Kaspersky AV running..
Migrated my existing local site perfectly, (full site+db) from Wamp to Acquia server (local). It will ask you during install, just have the existing site running, and pick your db, user+passw.

I'm trying to help my son instal Drupal 8. We uploaded the drupal files to the server andwhen we go to the website to do the install we get this error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '[', expecting ')' in /home/thenig98/public_html/vendor/guzzlehttp/promises/src/functions.php on line 41

This is where we would expect to see the initial "Choose language" screen.

I can see this happens to a lot of ppl. After going through the Mysql, PHP install , and database creation, and testing, opening Droopal only gets a WSOD. No log entries, nothing.
First I did 7.43 and then the 8.06. Always same thing when you try to load the Droopal install script, you get a nice quiet Blank White screen. I finally stepped back to "cod-6.x-1.10/install.php" and that works fine.
Surely I am missing it.
