Drag and Drop Sortable Blocks in 5 minutes

I had been looking for easy to use modules that support dynamic drag and drop of blocks, without requiring the user to do any sort of fancy setup, etc. I needed something similar to the Google homepage sort of feel that allows users to customize the site immediately upon logging in.

I searched for various modules and although I did like the MySite module, it was ultimately too sophisticated for our user base. To put it in simple terms, I needed something that provided drag and drop and sort for blocks, and users could do this on any page just by dragging the actual blocks around. It also needed to be persistent and remember the user set positions of blocks across page refreshes and sessions, and if possible support moving blocks from group to group.

Enter docking boxes. I had used the script before for some minor things and I liked it due to its simplicity and emphasis on using CSS framework. It also provides a nice sorting animation, is keyboard accessible and remembers the position of element boxes (blocks) using a cookie.

The script allows you to setup an unlimited number of drag and drop groups on either a horizontal or vertical axis and allows you to drag and drop elements within groups, but does not have a provision for moving boxes to other groups.

Still a lot of work to be done, but have made extensive use of the GMAP module to display hiking information. Have extensive linkage of data between pages which is generated dynamically at page load time.

Although I started using some of the built-in views tools to generate my data sets, I ended up using custom SQL to do most of it to try and minimise number of queries.

Please provide any feedback, suggestions and tips.

Post-War Buildings

Post-War Buildings is a site that I have been working on with a colleague. It's a educational resource and catalogue of post-war architecture. At the moment all the buildings are from London but we hope to expand it to take in the rest of Britain and eventually the rest of the world.

This was made fast.. in a few days, so the design is missing almost completely. It's a slightly modified "Foliage" theme. I doesn't validate CSS and XHTML thou, i hope i will take care of this tomorrow.

Aniway, this is it: http://www.rodiaspora.com

at last, I am almost done!

Wow, what a trial and error learning curve this has been. I modified quite heavily the appearance of the Bluebreeze theme. Looking back I needn't have started with that one, but the comments and structure of the CSS made this new thing in life easier to learn.

Problem is, my #sidebar-right mnu isn't visible in IE. I cant fix it without stuffing it up in Firefox. This is something I never expected and its driving me nuts.

Anyway, here it is (rather plain on purpose). www.steepdeepjapan.com
