Upgrading Drupal

Hi All,
I've been doing research for quite sometime but couldn't figure out a clear (and simple) way to sync Drupal 6.x with Drupal 5.x.

What I've done till now
1) Drupal 5.x is live
2) Created a development site for Drupal 6.x
3) Upgraded the dev site from Drupal 5.x to Drupal 6.x via upgrade process
4) We have added content in live site (Drupal 5.x) while on Dev site (Drupal 6.x) we added some custom fields, types etc. etc.

Hi dear Drupal developers,
In my site's forum I can view the posts that administrators or logged in users have posted. But I can't view those that guests and logged out users have posted. Please help with this problem. How can I allow my guests (not registered and anonymous users) to create a node or a forum topic? How to give them permission?

In my forum it says '3 new' messages, but when I click it it doesn't show anything...
When I was logged out and posted new forum topic, after clicking 'Save' it said 'Page not foun'. Any suggestions?

I'm new to Drupal but experienced with php, mysql, and programming; I usually develop in dreamweaver and have CS5.
I have a client who is hosting the site and wants the site in Drupal. He doesn't want me to change any php code though during development because he says the site will be harder to update.

Is that true?

Hello I get this error when i try to do a new install to 6.17:
The Drupal installer requires that you create a settings file as part of the installation process.

I changed the settings.php to include:
$base_url = 'http://localhost:8888/mysite';

Any suggestions? This is my first upgrade and am findning the documentation less than helpful.

This issue is interesting, after upgrading the following modules: custom pagers, filefield, imagefield, jquery_update, pathauto, token and views nivo slider

After that.. clicking any link, initiates the lightbox effect instead of navigating to that page ( expected/prior behavior )

I did use the alpha version of the jquery update, as specified in the nivo slider page. Im figuring that to be the issue, but Im hoping I can make it work because I wanted to get nivo's slider on my front page too : )
