Upgrading Drupal

When I do a database update I get an error that states.

warning: realpath() [function.realpath]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 1538 is not allowed to access /tmp owned by uid 0 in /home/williamp/public_html/includes/file.inc on line 190.

Anyone have an idea what this may mean and how I can fix it?

I had trouble migrating a site from a sub-folder to the root and had to start the drupal install from scratch. I now can not restore it as my .mysql backup from the Backup and Migrate Module is 8MB and the module says the limit is 2 MB.

Is there any way around this?

is there a more simple method to upgrade, when I have no shell access to the webserver, but only ftp access?
Now I first make a backup, then I uncompress the update (eg. module) on a local machine using the structure of a drupal project und copy it to the project via ftp, neglecting old files, but overwriting them.
I have this to do for every project on a new, bare structure, awfully time consumpting .

Any suggestions?

I have a Drupal 5.x site that has been somewhat neglected when it comes to updating every time there is a new update available. My question is, do I have to go through and install each update, or can I just install the last update? It seems I have not updated since 2008 - these are all listed as security updates.

I want to start with 7.x Alpha and continue with upgrading to every new release.

I'm working on an old site, made by someone else years ago.
I don't know it very well yet.. It has a lots of bugs and some of them seem really too hard for me to find. Hope you can help me with some of them.
It doesn't make sense to write them all in one post, so I'll start with only one problem ;)

The site had acidfree installed and has lots of albums. Unfortunately this function did not work any more before this site was given to me. The images did not show anymore.
But of course the site's owner wants his albums back!
