I think Drupal's fluid, organic perspective, based around blogs, comments and tagging, may be good for a school website, rather than the traditional 'forum/articles/news' format. I already have a website like this, but the students probably think of it as a resource repository rather than an interactive resource in itself.
I'd like to try the drupal approach, BUT I also need to keep the following features from the traditional 'model':
- graphical button-like nav menus, supporting drop-downs and expanding sub-menus
- static school prospectus pages
- download section (1000 pdfs within 50 categories)
- language switching (ie. whilst viewing an English article, pushing a button reveals the spanish version)
- a centralised gallery for all types of media
- a news-like section with several categories of news
- an fully featured, interactive calendar
- 'survey forms' which get filled in by parents and emailed to whoever set the form up
- self-subscription mailing lists for guests (they enter their email address, which is then verified)
