A simple blog

I have a simple page that I need to make for an art installation. It will display a blog and have a comment section for the viewers. The only non-traditional thing is that the blog needs to be on the left hand side of the page and the comments need to be on the right side of the page. Also when leaving a comment I want to suggest that people enter their e-mail address (have a box to subscribe to future updates,) that info needs to compile somewhere out of the public domain.

Can you suggest any links to get me started with this simple page.

What modules expand drupal for a social network site?

There are tons of modules that I saw. I want to make a decent social networking site, so I was wondering what modules drupal actually has for this. I saw liferay, but it seems a lot harder to install on something like my host. So drupal looked like the way to go.

I would like my site to:
Have a profile page for each user
Allow comments on the page
photo uploads for each user
blogs for each user
a chat system similiar to facebooks for chat between friends
Allow to be invisible to everyone but friends

Okay, My Intentions, Version 3...

Well, thanks for clicking on my post to read it, you may be becoming frustrated at my own increasing frustration -- and I've yet to even install Drupal or find a webhost that accepts it!

I'm doing "reconnaissance," see...and I don't like what I see so far. But I'm learning, and the reality of the situation is what it is, and here's what I now understand, in light of my intentions for using Drupal:

I want first a "static" Web 1.0 "company brochure" kind of site, purely informational, with tips and hints about the subject matter to be covered and contact information.

project mgt module?

I have tried Storm but kept running into database errors. Are there others which are as good or better?

Many thanks!!

Ye Olde Drupal Starter Kit??

Hi Everyone,

Here's what I'm looking to use Drupal for; if there's a tutorial around (preferably step-by-baby-step!), please share its URL; thanks!

I'm looking to create a website that is an informational resource that will also have blogs and forums and audio-visual materials, both "original to the site" and visitor-contributed.

Like everybody else. ;-)

But just how do I go from here -- where I'm still looking through a list of Drupal-friendly webhosts -- to there, where the technological backbone is in place for me to just go and start posting articles, blogs, and video?

I've just purchased the new Drupal 6 book by David Mercer and it will arrive in a few days...but though I am 100% comfortable with XHTML and CSS hand-coding and am a reasonably competent JavaScript "skript kiddie," I'm totally new to the CMS/CMF world, having only heard about it a few months ago and having only started reading on Drupal *yesterday!*

So my plan right now is to sign up with a Drupal-friendly webhost and start tinkering...but I really don't see any Drupal tutorials around (then again, I just have no luck with search engines, even though I understand the whole concept of keywords)...part of my problem as a newbie is that I'm still trying to wrap my mind around just how Drupal will help me do what I need.
