SEO optimization for drupal

It seems to me that adding meta tags and what not is done through taxonomy. I'd like to get a better understanding. Should I go in and edit these things myself? For anybody who knows about SEO they know that google only reads so far down in the html of the page. I need to create good meta tags for each article, tutorial, etc for each content type of the page before launching on a regular host and adding to search engines. If anybody is familiar with SEO please let me know what the best way to do this on the drupal platform is.

Implementing images into my articles

The site is setup and I am ready to start writing articles for the site. However, I'd like to place some images in the articles. A small thumbnail here, and there that the text wraps around. How do I go about doing this for a content type? Thanks in advance for any help. You guys have been of great help in getting me started with drupal. I'm learning quickly and I know my way around quite well.

Drupal as knowledge preservation system

Hello to all,

I am working on a knowledge preservation application, and I'd like to base it on an open source CMS such as Drupal. Since the application is a bit different from the usual document management systems, there is no "off the shelf" solution for it. I'd like to know your opinion on the suitability of Drupal for the task, or if I would be better off with another open source CMS (or if I'd better write the app from scratch). I'm evaluating Joomla, Drupal and Knowledgetree.

The application is a distributed database where scientific institutions in a particular field can upload their data, reports, research papers, raw binary data, etc. The goal is to provide a central repository for scientific literature in a particular field, where interested parties contribute with their own data and access the data uploaded by other scientific institutions. It is aimed at public research centers and universities.

Since this is publicly funded project, and is intended to be a way of preserving and disseminating knowledge to promote scientific research, it has no commercial ramifications. For this reason it will be released under an opensource license and will not use proprietary tools.

The requirements are:
1- open source
2- web based
3- with strong user authentication / secure

Creating an advanced search page

Hey guys,

We are using Drupal basically as a database to store information about contracts that our company maintains. I was able to create CCK fields, exposing these as facets, and enabling them as filtering criteria on the "more options" search page as you can see on this screenshot: http://imgur.com/oFCJ5.jpg
