Before you start

I am about to start an intranet project for a small company with wikis, blogs, calendars,instant messaging/shouts and links to BI information. Originally I thought to base it on Open Atrium 1 or 2 but given the imminent arrival of Drupal 8 is it worth hanging on and waiting for that release before embarking on the project?

Any advice greatly appreciated by a Drupal newbie.

We are contemplating adding a new site to a small collection of sites already on Drupal. This site would provide a place where Authors in a certain genre could create pages about themselves and pages about their Books (probably as Drupal book pages below the author page). The site would also provide a similar structure for Reviewers and their Reviews. I have a couple of questions about how this might work and wonder if anyone has a suggestion of modules I should explore.

I'm new to Drupal and just experimenting with Drupal 7.

Can anyone recommend any Drupal websites which just show what is possible without any extra Modules activation. I haven't learn't anything about Modules yet so could do with seeing what is possible just by knowing the very basics. Then I will know that I know the basics once I have a website that can do similar things. Then I can build from there.

I have a Travel Agency that wants to edit their site but they can't since it's written in ASP, and there is no chance to put a "CMS function" inside it.

Is there any module, feature or App that produces adequate function to produce a Business Plan like what has been implemented in sba.gov/tools/business-plan?
