Drupal not viable without better documentation :(

I'm setting up a new site and wanted to try v4.6 to avoid upgrade issues. I coudn't make it work. The database refused my connection and I'm sure I was something I did or didn't do but I had no idea how to procede. I had followed what purported to be the installation instructions but they are woefully inadequate for a newbie and I gave up.

So I installed and had working v4.5.2. Then I tried the upgrade, again following instructions but got the same error message again. I tried to follow the instructions to upgrade my database but there wasn't anything to upgrade with. If I installed the database again, it was refused.

I like the interface and the sample sites but I've always had trouble actually configuring a site with Drupal.

Can anyone tell me whether there is any good documentation for installation and configuration available? Preferable one that's not just links to somewhere else where one finds comments and is never sure what exactly to believe.

Sorry to rant. I really wish I could use Drupal. It's the closest CMS to what I want to use. But I've spent hours and hours working with v4.5.2 and now the frustration of trying to enable v4.6 just about has me going back to hand coding.

Assuming y'all are still 'speaking' to me, and recognizing I haven't given you much to work with, can anyone point me to a good set of administration documentation for any version of Drupal.

Documentation or websites that use Groups and Projects

I am considering Drupal for a site I'd like to build that, in Drupal terminology, would support several groups, with each group containing several projects that would have different moderators.

I am impressed with what Drupal can do from browsing its documentation, looking at the forums, and reviewing the feature lists. I believe it would be perfect for what I'm trying to do but haven't found specific documentation or examples to confirm this after browsing the showcased websites. I also could not find in the documentation how to tie projects to specific groups.

Drupal as a online magazine?

Hi there. I have a couple of questions.

I have a potential client that is wanting a content management system that is basically set up like a magazine but online. To view the major buffs of the magazine, they need to be a subscriber. Could drupal possibly do this? My client plans to bring in money from his website due to the subscriptions.

Thanks!

weblink with 4.6?

i'm very interested in using the weblink module and am not sure if it will work effectively with 4.6 - has anybody tried it on this release? if not, is there a most recent stable version that will work with weblink? the site indicates an older version (older than 4.6 anyways).

thanks in advance

Member web pages mod??

Your CMS has almost everything I need. Possibly I missed it but I would like to give the registered members the ability to web based create a single templete based web page to advertise their business. Is there a mod for this?? Their link to this page would end up being:
www.mysite.com/biz/their_bussinessname.htm
or something of that nature :)

What Flavor of Linux?

I am running Drupal on a Nitix box right now. Nitix seems to be very stable and pretty easy for a windows guy (such as me) to administer. And, Boy, they have made it really secure... (How secure is it???) It is so secure, they do not let you change any of the operating parameters! Anyway... It's a good box, but I don't think it fits the bill as far as Drupal is concerned. Simple items such as Clean Urls are not and WILL NOT be allowed.

So that being said: I am building a brand new Linux Box.
