Drupal for newspapers? And the menu system...

I’m wondering if Drupal would be appropriate for a small town (15,000) weekly newspaper’s on-line site? One of the things that concerns me is the menuing system, which I am convinced for a newspaper type needs to be “hierarchical”, and I gather that the default menuing system is not? Ideas, input, comments?

Directory Server

I'm working up my first multi-site with drupal (and thanks to all posters - I was able to do the entire prefix setup via reading the posts, took a few passes on the stuff at the bottom, but I got it)

I opted not to share any tables, can I use "Directory Server" locally? instead of sharing my users table?

example

site1.mymainsite.com
mymainsite.com

then set Directory Server to mymainsite.com? and then users passwords would be work at both sites?

Pros and Cons?

thanks

Looking into setting up a music site using Drupal with Top Music Module and Coppermine gallery

Hi,

I have a great interest in rare music (70's library, funk, soul and electronic) and have been collecting a lot over the past years. I am now very keen in starting up a non-profit website catered for vinyl collectors who may already have a vast collection of unknown hidden gems and would like to share their interest to the public, like i do. I hope to built up a massive database of rare collectible music online and to help myself and others in tracking down more dusty grooves which have been lost or forgotten.

Technically, i have knowledge in HTML, CSS, server management and recently some basic MySQL4 with PHP5. As you can see i have an immense learning to catch up in programming, therefore is looking at building a site without too much technical work (even though i am keen to learn but i am building this site on my own and have many other work to consider as well).

What i require for my site is:

- Category for genres/artists/songs
- A - Z listings
- A minute audio sample clips for each song
- Users are able to contribute their own music and upload their own mp3s
- Rating for each song
- Voting system (i think Drupal already has one)
- Fourm (i think Drupal already has one)

One great example of a site i want to create, would be across between:

http://www.funk45.com/ (good looking site with audio clips) and http://www.discogs.com/ (good informative website)

How to Download Drupal Code & Handbook in just a few files?

It's always nice to find a new Open Source product...

Drupal looks good & excites some interest over here.

BUT... getting its many (often small, in the case of
module) files seems to be disappointingly slow.

I am looking for an FTP site or perhaps some a few
compact files (in either tgz or zip format) that may
save me time & tedium, as I try to get what I need
to evaluate Drupal... the code & its documentation.

recommended hardware specs

Hi, I was wondering what kind of hardware would be recommended for a site averaging about 50,000 pageviews per day, 600MB database, 265,000 pieces of content. Currently we have a CMS that uses MySQL but all content is cached to HTML, and logins are permitted only for site admins, not general readers.

Is Drupal fast?

I think one of my main concerns as far as creating a site goes is how fast the site runs. I mean, features are great, but if load times are over a second for a page, I get a bit turned off. Geeklog was kind of like this. Some sites will render in 0.15 seconds, some will take 1.3 seconds. It was just really inconsistent, and it bothered me.

So how fast is Drupal? Drupal.org seems kind of slow, but I'm assuming thats more a result of the server than the software.
