Need recommendations for a profile site. Please help!!

I'm completely new to drupal and would definitely appreciate some advice. I'm looking to build a site that will allow users to build profiles, add media. Is there a theme in particular that I can use to start such a site. I've been looking at some modules but I wasn't sure if there's a theme that comes equipped with some of the functionality that I need. Would look function somewhat like this site: http://www.lifestorynet.com/obituaries/howard-s-growe.108510.

Build my personal site using Drupal

I would like to built my own personal site that would have maybe 2-3 pages. I know that using Drupal would be overkill but I figured at same time I could learn how to make my own custom theme while i am doing it. I am curious if other people have done personal sites using Drupal. Any opinions would be much appreciated.

Best practice question about a Drupal-based web application

We're developing a site in Drupal that will have a paid-access web application, and I'm wondering if the public-facing marketing/informational content and the paid-access part of the site should be built into one Drupal installation, or if the public-facing site should be built in its own Drupal installation and the application in another.

Drupal multisite is not an option because the hosting platform (Pantheon) doesn't support it.
