How do I restrict and tune Content?

In the "permissions" section the only option for "anonymous" in the node module is all or nothing. I need anonymous to have access (view) to for example book, story blogs and page but restrict access to blogs or visa versa, mix and match. I also would like to know how to go about having a public and private blog, pages, etc..

I also don't see a thing for other modules like "image, image_gallery", but I'll bring that up on the respective module threads. But I need to get this answered beforehand.

So where should I be looking to accomplish this?

Thanks

Installation to 1and1

I have uploaded Drupal by request to one of my clients, yet when installing the very first thing arises:

Failed to connect to your MySQL database server. MySQL reports the following message: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2).

* Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
* Are you sure that you have typed the correct database hostname?
* Are you sure that the database server is running?

Some issue in setting up my Deupal

I am converting my Postnuke site to Drupal. Doing it manually, but that is ok. What I need to know is how do I keep forum oists from showing up in the fromt page> All I wnat on the front page are my blog posts.I am using the built-in forum file type to do forum post.

Also, my drupal is currently sitting in its own folder = a subfolder of my root. Whem I am ready to take it live, should I move the files to the root or is there an easier way to do this? If I do move the files, will it still work okay?

Please explain - File System - public/private confused

Ok, I'm in the process of setting up my second site. I'm confused by the File System configuration where you either select public or private.

Upon uploading files via the attachment method and then clicking on those files to download them, my normal download manager kicks in and downloads. According to the public method, you can access the files via http directly, so I purposely pointed my web browser to the file to be downloaded and the file downloaded, whether I had public or private selected.

What is the point of either public or private?
