4.7 Beta 5?

Or should we call it a Release Candidate?
I am trying to stay on top of things in the Drupal world and have no idea when to expect the next update to the 4.7 version. Far be it from me to be pushy so feel free to ignore this post. I'll take that as a "It'll be ready when it's ready".

Still, how about a next month or it's already released!....

Also, I have heard of the development email list but don't know how to subscribe. I checked in my account settings under newsletters with no success.

160 characters and $280 dollars – ordering beer via SMS

Late night crowdText message powered campaigns are getting even more practical. At the Drupal Meet-up in DC last Thursday we ran up a nice $280 bar tab running our first field test of an SMS gateway module/API and a couple last-minute modules we put together to have a website (Drupal powered) talk to cell phones. As folks joined our meetup group at Busboys and Poets, they signed up on the website with their name, mobile number, and email. When they submitted their information, they received an SMS message from the website telling them to speak to the waiter with long hair to get a drink on Development Seed. Too bad Delirium Tremens was on tap – that was the cause of the larger than expected tab.

If we weren’t literally finishing the code on the module while people were ordering their beers, we could have had each person select what they wanted to drink from a menu, and then have the system send us an alert when we hit a price cap.

There are some bars that sell their beer like it’s on the stock market – when a beer is popular its price increases and you can see a live digital chart above the bar for the current price of your beer. With the SMS gateway you could use a Drupal site to send out beer stock prices to sippers in a crowded bar so when Delerium drops back down to something they can afford, they can hit buy…or you could send out real stock prices.

vB Drupal news: New site, and SourceForge project

It has been almost 5 months since releasing vB Drupal, a customized version of Drupal that plugs into vBulletin. More than 400 members indicated they have installed it, so I'm guessing a much higher number of actual installations. There have been a few volunteers who helped it grow and contributed ideas and code. Someone actually started a new site at http://www.vbdrupal.org (only the domain is mine) and a few developers started sending new modules, blocks and bug fixes that I decided to start a SourceForge project to make it easier for others to join in: http://sourceforge.net/projects/vbdrupal/

Two new core committers

I'm happy to announce that as of today, there will be two new core committers:

Gerhard Killesreiter (killes)
Gerhard will be a maintainer of the DRUPAL-4-7 branch. Drupal 4.7.0 will be our best release to date, and having a dedicated maintainer is going to be extremely valuable. I believe Gerhard will do a great job securing the stability of the Drupal 4.7 release series. After all, he is particularly skilled in saying "no, only bugfixes are allowed". ;-)
Neil Drumm (drumm)
Neil will be a maintainer of the DRUPAL-4-8/DRUPAL-5-0 branch (the next Drupal version after Drupal 4.7). An important reason for putting Neil in this role is his background with the update/install system and his experience maintaining a successful Drupal distribution. Hopefully, his experience will help us to get closer to supporting install profiles.

Please join me in thanking Gerhard and Neil for taking on these roles.

This brings the number of core committers to four: Gerhard Killesreiter (killes), Neil Drumm (drumm), Steven Wittens (steven) and myself. Gerhard and Neil will operate under different terms than Steven and myself. Read on to learn more about this.
