Google translate gadget "Translate Section of Website" trouble

Im developing site. Although by default it is English, it will be a very multilingual site with some posts in English, some in French and some in Haitian Creole. I have the google translate drop down menu installed no problem for non English speaking viewers, but the other function provided by google translate I cannot get to work.

trouble with translations and localization

Hello people,

I'm new to drupal... and I've got some problems with localization...

First issue: I wanted a german installation of drupal, so I installed drupal-7.12-DE.tar.gz. (I put the extracted folder in /usr/local/lib, and created a symlink to this folder in /var/www. Is that a right praxis?). As far as well. But the drupal site is not in german but in english. Ok, so I tried to find a german language package. The link sent me to "http://localize.drupal.org/" where I found a file like "drupal-7.11.de.po". But when I tried to import this file via "Configurations->Translate interface->Import" the server didn't react at all.
Then I installed the language-update-module (l10n_update-7.x-1.0-beta3.tar.gz) and tried to install the german-language-package via "Configurations->Languages->add language". Ok. After downloading 17% of the language-files the process freezed, so I now have a mishmash of english and german.
Back to "Configuration->Translate interface->Update" I'm told about two uninstalled translations available, drupal core and localization-module, but to update these available translations failed aswell by 17%.

My Questions:
Is there anything obvious that I do wrong, or is it a deeper mystery to localize drupal?
What do drupal actually do (try to do)? Where goes the language-files, and is "drupal-7.11.de.po" a language-file or a language-package?

Menu translation problem

Hello, i have a problem which i really don't know how to fix. Recently i have instaled internationalization module in my drupal but there are some problems i don't know how to fix. Everything is fine and fixable....but the menu. For my english page, it looks normal, but when i switch to turkish version i only see home and contact menu tabs out of 7 menu tabs in total. Can please someone tell me how to fix this?

Cannot change a translation

I have installed the notify module in a drupal 6.22 installation and in the user profile I get a translation for the tab. This translation is not what I want so I want to change this. Now I have tried a lot (see below) but I was not able to change it.
What I have done so far, I have:
- translated the whole site to Dutch (succesfull)
- installed the automatic translations (succesfull)
- imported the .po file in dutch for notify and changed other fields (successfull).

How to translate English (built-in) language?

Hi,
For testing purposes, I've install clean drupal6 and put few string in t() in order to translate. No idea why the string does not appear in Front-End after I've installed "Content translation" module.

I want to get something straight:
Is it possible to translate strings inside t() without using String Overrides module? I would like to enable that another person can translate all strings that programmers/designers have put in module/templates.

Best regards
