Newbie forum problems - negative number of new posts reported

I'm new and starting with 4.5rc

I have several forums set up as follows:

In Categories, there is a vocabulary named "Discussion Forums" of type "forum topic", hierarchy = "multiple", and "multiple select" is checked (I'm not sure if I understand these last two). I have added several terms to act as Forum Topics. When I click on the forum link (at top of default theme), everything looks good and there is a table with headings "forum", "topics", "posts", "last post".

At first, this all worked fine. I made a number or test posts and replies, and deleted posts.

I think the problem may have started when I began renaming, re-arranging, and DELETING categories that already had things assigned to them. However, at one point I did delete all forum postings and category terms, and started over, but the problem persists.

Here's what's happening.

When I post a new forum topic, it all seems to work fine. No errors, and the posted message renders fine after submitting. But if I click back on the forums link to go to the main forums page, there are still zeros for "topics", "posts", "last post", and under topics, there's a hyperlink labeled "-1 new". Clicking it, or the forum title, both of which would usually show me the posted topic, always show only empty forum pages (headers with no posts).

If I continue to post more topics, the negative numbers increase (i.e. "-2 new", "-3 new", etc.). The posted topics are never available, except if I browse the archives. There they all show up. So it seems they are being posted, just not tracked properly.

Safe file permissions for Drupal installation?

Thanks to your great input, I now have a perfectly running installation of Drupal.

However, just one quick question:

What would be the safe file permissions for a secure Drupal-installation?

4.5-rc-0 / Workflow / Roles

I am looking at the 'default workflow' in the 4.5 rc 0 and have a quick question: does anyone know if it's possible to build multiple workflows and assign them to different access roles? For example, I'd like for my end users to be able to write up stories that would enter the submission queue, while my staff's would get automatic approval.

Any ideas would be most appreciated,

Michael

How to configure e-mail options

I have installed a Drupal-driven (drupal-4.4.2) page on my computer (a workstation running Linux with all mailing services disabled) for testing purposes, and I would like to use the SMTP mail-server (which is also the main server) of the intranet to distribute the e-mail messages from the registration process. Some colleagues have created accounts, but have not received their passwords -- so I assume that the e-mailing function is not active.

I didn't find any more detailed e-mail configuration posibilities, so I am not sure if this is possible though...

Menus and url aliases (4.5rc)

Can anyone confirm that menus aren't working with url aliases? The menu won't expand or, for subitems, stay expanded if the path is an url alias.

You can try it at http://www.tucom.de/web3. Go on "Leistungen" (path = node/xx). This is working. Now go on "OpenOffice" (path = openoffice). The page ist loaded correctly, but the menu is no longer expanded. Then try "Leistungen" -> "Programmierung (path = node/xx). This is working as intended.

All block content reads process.

Well for some unknown reason all my blocks ( http://www.patentlystupid.com ) are reading just the word process. Any ideas? If I go to edit the stories as admin they are there, and I have run a repair on the mysql db just in case.
