Upgrading Drupal

Please forgive any obvious demonstration of ignorance but I am new to al of this and not very technical!!

I need to upgrade my version of Drupal and don't know how. My site is about four years and has recently been hacked into by bots which I also need to remove.

I am told that upgrading the software will assist with this as would installing an image verification system (CATCHA) to verify e-mails. I am getting a lot of q.uin.anste type registrations?

I can access the Content Management system but am struggling to get much beyond there.

My sandbox site (MAMP – Snow Leopard – Drupal 6) is not displaying PHP content in any way, and I have no idea why.

Firstly I have activated the PHP Content module in core.

The content though was imported with the database from a Drupal 5 site.

I'm receiving the following message in my status report:

"optionwidgets module can not be updated. Its schema version is 0. Updates up to and including 1 have been removed in this release. In order to update optionwidgets module, you will first need to upgrade to the last version in which these updates were available."

I have just transferred my database and files to another server, and now when I log into my admin section I get the user page then all the other pages are access denied and it throughs me out of the admin.

Why could this be?

please some one help, I have looked all over and even tried things i have seen people say but it didn't fix anything

I upgraded from 7.0 alpha1 to alpha2. When I run update.php, I get the error message:

on the update.php?op=results page.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 / Apache 2.2.12 / MySQL 5.1.37 / PHP 5.2.10 on VirtualBox 3.1.4 on Windows XP Pro.

Can I just create the table by hand? Where can I find the table definition?
