Upgrading Drupal

I'm doing a migration from a Drupal 6 site to Drupal 8.4. Unfortunately, when I try to bring over the complete data, the migration fails when converting the user data, which makes a series of other conversions that are dependent on user data fail as well.

Any idea please why our site can't download these updates? Is it the way they are packaged or something wrong our end?
'HTTP error 0 occurred when trying to fetch https:...'

This seems to be quite a pain in the ass.

To begin, an admission: 1) I did not backup my site as I should have prior to installation of this upgrade. I have upgraded countless times before without issue, and felt confident this would be no different. I was wrong.

I run a website that uses the Business adaptive theme. This theme has a slideshow on the top of the main page. After the update, that slideshow no longer appeared.

Ive never worked with Drupal. One of my clients needed an urgent upgrade of their website to the newer D8. Its currently at Drupal 6 but Im struggling to find any forums telling me how to upgrade it to the newest version of Drupal. Can anyone please tell me with steps on how to do it and exactly how to or refer me to a forum that can tell me that please. even updating to to 7 and then 8
