Hosting multiple domains?

Hi, I am new to Drupal and am trying to determine whether or not it's the best platform for what I am trying to accomplish. I want to host multiple domains on one Drupal installation. In the research I've done, I found a patch here: http://drupal.org/project/multidomain, but it wasn't clear to me whether or not I can have multiple sites on one installation. Can some more experienced Drupal users chime in on if this can be accomplished, and if this patch is the way to do it? Thank you, I appreciate any help you can offer.

Should Drupal have Names?

For example, D6 would have nickname1, D7 would have a completely new nickname, as would D8. Just thinking that this would make searches much easier. Looking for shared table information, I keep getting D6 info, even if I type D7 or Drupal 7 in the search box.

Kind of like Ubuntu always having their animal names for releases.

Drupal Life cycle

Yesterday at Drupal Downunder, the question of product life cycle came up during the Q&A at the end of Dries' Keynote.

Traditionally Drupal supports the current version, and the previous version. When a new version comes out the oldest supported version is retired. This is great, except the unpredictable life cycle means that clients investing in Drupal sites cannot be certain of the amount of time before their site will have to be upgraded, and in some cases the support period for each major version number is not long enough (from a client perspective).

Advice: should we use Drupal to redo our Expression Engine site?

Sorry about this long post. We are a non-profit media arts organization desperate for some advice!

I am the de facto web person for the Maine Film & Video website. It was designed by somebody else in Expression Engine, utilizing aMember as our database. Since nobody around here seems to know how to use these software programs, any problems we have cannot be easily resolved. I am considering learning Drupal with the intention of redoing the entire site (hopefully sticking with aMember). What we need the site to do is:

-e-commerce, new members join/pay on the site, get renewal notices and other group emails

-member profile page, managed by members where they list their skills, contact info, picture etc.

-searchable database, members skills can be searched by potential clientele getting them new jobs

-forums, some available to members only where people can network, share information, post jobs, get jobs and sell equipment

-a homepage where news items can be easily posted, categorized and archived

-a calendar for listing upcoming industry events
