Drupal 8.x

I have no idea what version of Drupal I have and I am new to this.
I have a catalog page with items for sale. They are displayed in rows and each row has 3 items across.
I would like to sort the order of these items. The list position doesn't seem to work. I think I have most of them set
at position 0 and it says if they have the same position they will be sorted alphabetically but mine just appear in the order they were uploaded.

Iv been looking around and found a couple different websites like http://templatemonster.com, http://rockettheme.com, and http://website-template.com but I am not sure which to go for... anyone know of a good site that is really trustworthy and that has great support when you need it.

I found many addons in the appropriate sections, however, there are two problems:
- My project is not for profit so I would like to find free
- I do not know if they can also be implemented with non-admin account (multi users), where do I look?

I am needing to find an exciting topic for my Academical Research project, and am hoping someone might have an idea or two.

I am doing final year Masters Degree in Computer Science & Mathematics, and am looking for appropriate topic which is challenging enough for this level of Academical Research.
Being one of the drupalist people, I will be super-happy to find such a topic related to Drupal which will benefit both the Drupal Community and give me a deeper knowledge of Drupal.
