Trying to build a site similar to www.good.is. How easy would this be with Drupal?

Hello,

I am building a site for global independent media. I'm looking for an Open Source CMS system and right now I'm leaning towards Drupal. I've tried Joomla, but I don't like that I need external modules for things like comments, a basic forum, and basic community features. Can anybody tell me how difficult it would be to build a site with similar look, feel, and functionality as www.good.is with Drupal?

Can i restrict users to their profile pages and photo albums?

Hi, I am a newbie. I want to create a website where users will be able to create profile pages including photo albums which can
viewed by other users but can only be edited/managed by the user who created it. I would really be glad if i can get help with this.

Application builder

Hi all,

I'm as new and uninformed as one can get in Drupal. So I need to know whether Drupal has sort of an 'application' builder, much like Fabrik (www.fabrikar.com) for Joomla is. And please don't go on, on how very bad Joomla is and how much better Drupal is. Really, not very useful. The Fabrik link is a reference to what I could use for building a web app.

So, not a simple CCK (not sure what CCK is capable of in Drupal) where one adds a field or two to an article/item. Nor am I after the intergration of various existing modules which one can combine. I'm after an extension that allows to 'sort of' build extensions, package them, export and all with little knowledge of PHP.

Further more, provided that such exists, what would it do performance wise? Does it put an big load on the system or should that be fairly ok. And as such I'm talking about very large data sets and lots of users. Not that I already have them in the system as such, yet that is the target, or should I say 'one never knows'. So key words here are scalability, security and performance.

The reason is that such a system allows for quick and rapid development of various approaches, representations, storage methods in the case where one needs very flexible for uploading, viewing and presenting data without having to rely on actual developers.

Newcomer going wild.

Hi everyone!

Im kinda new to Drupal, just done some minor stuff to already existing sites. I'm a Java developer from the beginning and worked with .NET, Groovy/Grails and PHP and some other stuff. But I've come to a point where I want to digg deeper into something and I think it's gonna be Drupal. So I've got some questions for you already experienced people out there.

1. Any particular books that's recommended to start with (beginner books)?

2. Any other sources than books that's good to start with?

3. Should I start with Drupal 6.x or go directly to 7.x?

A second basic question on the order of articles/pages/nodes on a page

My second basic question is how and where is it possible to change the order of articles/pages/nodes on a page ?

And is it possible to move one by one these articles (as it is possible to do it for Blocks, ofr instance...)
