Before you start

Hi I am as amateur as they come so before I get too ahead of myself I just wanted to know if Drupal can handle what I need.

I am developing a site where users can register and and store info of items. (possibly upload and associate images to "items" as well)

Anonymous users can search for a particular field and the site will find user(s) who "possess" the particular item.

The site will return info regarding the "item" without displaying the personal info of the "owner"

I want to make an image sharing site, where users can 'like' (vote for) any image. I would also like to have a slide show on the front page of the most 'liked' images. Is it possible to do this with drupal? What modules would you suggest? Thanks.

I am a physician who has played with Coldfusion, ASP and PHP some time ago but I am not a programmer. I installed Drupal last year and I felt it's great but when I saw Lullabot and its products I felt it can be a solution for my idea.
I need your advice and opinion about this problem:

I'm looking to create a site using Drupal with the same functionality as http://www.goodreads.com. Can anyone confirm that Drupal is capable of doing this? If so, by taking a quick look at it - what modules would I need?

I would like to create a website for my family (in a large acceptance of the word) to share pictures and documents (family tree, old scanned docs, etc...), maintain an address book and have a forum. Drupal seems perfect for that, however I have a few concerns/questions.

1. We want a page where people can create create "albums" and upload images. These images must be immediately viewable by others. It should really be so simple that my grand-ma can use it, ie. creating a new page to put images on it is already too complicated. Ideally, the page will show a list of albums, you click on it and see the included pictures. The same page should have some kind of link "create new album" where people can then put the name of the album and upload images. Is IMCE a good choice for this ? any other module that could fit ?

2. Something very similar to 1. is needed for any type of document. In a certain way, it is the same requirement as 1. simply not images.

3. We also would like an address book that users can modify themselves. This address book should not be linked with the actual registered users. Again, it must be trivial to add a "card", modify one or browse them. I saw many modules about addresses but couldn't find any for this exact need. Any idea ?
