Keeping an old site up for now

I'm about to start my third drupal site. My first one I just left the maintenance page up while I worked on it. The second on was a page for a client who's old site was hosted else where and I made the maintenance page simply redirect to the old site while I worked on it.

Now the new site I'm about to start, the client already has a pretty substantial site up and running. Lots of pages but static html for the most part. What do you guys recommend for leaving the old site up but allowing me to work on the new site in maintenance and do a quick switch when I'm done.

Pressflow obsoleted by D7?

Does D7 have all the enhancements of Pressflow, or what does Pressflow have that D7 doesn't?

We're about to rebuild a portion of our site using Drupal, which we've not used before. We already get a lot of traffic and need to make our new version highly scalable, so the scalability enhancements in Pressflow (and D7?) are of particular interest.

thanks,
Chris

can Drupal handle all this requirements ?

Hi All,
Im new to Drupal, but not to CMS (i've worked with Wordpress and BuddyPress.)

I plan on building a website with the following features:
1) Each person who has registered for an account(he becomes member) gets an optional webpage under my domain.
For example, if my site name is 'mysite.com' and Larry Jason joins my site, he gets the page mypage.com/larryjason' or something like that.

2) There are a number of TYPES of users.
For example, Project Head, Assistant(s) to Project Head, Coders, etc......

3) Members can become, friends, join or form Groups, etc(the usual BASIC features of a social n/w site- add friends, join communities, privacy between non-friends,etc.......)

3) Each member can be of only 1 type, when logging with 1 email id, BUT can later on 'upgrade' or change to a different type of user,BUT his past entries on my site are 'intact'.
For example, Coder Larry Jason becomes Assistant to Project Head, but all the code work he has uploaded, his comments, etc.....are 'intact'.
Additionally, members can login with different email ids and avail of the feature of being of another 'type' of user, but be linked to their other profiles,in some way(optional feature).

4) Each member can choose his own webpage template for his webpage from an available list,or he contacts me, the site admin, for a truly customised webpage.

Creating a non community based website in Drupal.

Hey Guys,

I'm currently redoing a website for a small local Municipality. The previous website is entirely in HTML and CSS with java script and we have been using Dreamweaver and Contribute to maintain it. But they are just awful so I would really like to move away from them.

Forum thanking option

Just to toss out a suggestion, it may be worthwhile to add a thanking button along with the reply button here in the forum, enabling posters to be thanked for their helpful contributions. I enjoy this feature on excelforum.com and chessforums.org. Seems appropriate considering how community-driven Drupal is.
