Similar sites, one user base, yet individuality

The goal is to create a network of sites that are similar in their base configuration, yet share one user group. The idea is to support 3 to 6 sites in this network.

What we're looking for is:

  • Same configuration, modules, etc. Maybe some will have some modules turned on, while others off, but they'll all have the option to enable a module (but not add their own).
  • One user base. If a user registers as "JoeBlow" on one site, they can also login as "JoeBlow" on the other site. We'd prefer it if the user didn't have to login with "JoeBlow@example.com".
  • Individual user control per site. One maintainer may have "JoeBlow" with PermissionLevelA, while on another site, "JoeBlow" may have PermissionLevelB. Each site maintainer will not have access to another site's permission levels (this is most important!)
  • To have one "main" site which will receive particular content from all other sites on the network as a teaser, then either link to the original site for the full content, or have the node's content also appear in their site. Specifically, each site on the network can post press releases. We want those press releases to automatically appear in the main site's press release section - but not appear on other sites in the network.

I know that Drupal allows for shared core files. Would this ability to share core files also enable the ability to share a user base?

GoDaddy and the MySQL Lock Command?

I have a customer that has godaddy's shared hosting plan. I am planning on using Drupal for his project. I asked godaddy if drupal would work with their plan. This was there response:

"Thank you for contacting Online Support. You can use drupal on our shared hosting plans, however, drupal will need the MySQL Lock command. Because this is not available you will have to use a work around. , to view work around for the MySQL Lock command."

I searched the forum but could not find anyone with the same situation. What would I need to do to make this work?

Need help with views to create custom search block

Hi, I've been working on a classifieds website using CCK and Views as my primary weapons of choice. Now I want to create a custom Filters Search Box in one of the block that goes something like this:

Make ___________
Model ___________
Year ____________
--Submit

But I can't wrap my head around it. Basically I want to put the Exposed filters in a block and then send it off to a Views node with the results. I don't want to use the search_module because I want to filter my CCK fields.

Anyone have any idea how I should do this?

Thanks

Unix or NT?

Hello, please forgive again my ignorance. I am still trying to get Drupal installed properly. My hosting company does have MySQL 4.0 and higher if I so desire. They "need to know which Unix or NT platfrom I would like, and then they'll make the server switch". The only problem is I have no idea about Unix or NT, I just want the thing to be set-up already. I am willing to learn, since that is what it takes. But how do I know which to use? Is one better? Are there differences? Does it matter which I use? Any help opening the eyes of a total newbie would be greatly appreciated.
