Is Drupal a viable solution for my website? Please review What is Drupal before posting.

Drupal + CakePHP would it work?

I would like to create a community based site that would allow for people to "swap" certain items. Here are the basic functions that I would need:

1. Create account, edit account, view recent "swaps", view items the user currently has available for "swap"
2. Accept PayPal payments to fund their account with "swap credits"
3. Users would be able to search available items and "claim" the item, the item would then disappear off of the site and be placed into the users account.
4. they could only claim an item if they have an item up to be "swapped" for

adobe contribute vs drupal

i know it seems like a stupid question!? but our organisation is keen to have a content managed site developed and has had contribute recommended.

i have been pushing for an open source solution, especially Drupal but so far others seem to like the interface of contribute and need some concrete disadvantages of contribute compared to drupal to think about changing their mind.

can you all help me compile a list?

thanks

How customizable is Drupal?

I have already built my own site because I need a very specific custom look and feel for my customers (we're a record label). I was wondering if I can use Drupal on the back-end of the site to manage my content. Here are some examples of my needs: Throughout my site I have divs, each with a specific ID, where content content specific to that div will need to go (like tour dates, artist bio etc.).

Is Drupal right for upgrading my website?

I have been hand-coding HTML (BBEdit) for several years now, running my photography/educational website

http://www.junglephotos.com

I use Mambo to run a news archive, http://www.junglephotos.com/cms

I built a simple database, so have some rudimentary skills in that area (using phpMyAdmin, for example). I am not a coder/developer, but I can usually figure out how to integrate/adapt code into pages to make things work. (See wiki and forum for example.)

I have monetized the site, and want to keep that aspect.

Basically I want to upgrade the look, interactivity and features.

Sooooo, the questions:

1. Do I have the skills needed to implement Drupal as a complete CMS solution?
2. How good is Drupal support for RSS? e.g., I want to implement RSS support for every page (not just the frontpage as in Mambo-- a majpr shortcoming IMHO)
3. What theme would be most suitable?
4. What issues should I consider in migrating content? (I figure it will take a year or so to move all existing static pages to the Drupal template.)
5. Can I create a user community that can contribute blog-style to comment on particular pages, and rank those accordingly, so that users can see the most popular/highly ranked pages?
6. What are major problems, issues with installation, maintenance, stability, etc. I should know about?

Multiple Homepages for Community supersite

I am currently running a non-Drupal news and information site for different African communities in North America. Because of time constraints, I wish to "decentralize" the website - that is, leave the updating of news & info to the different communities. In effect, I want each community to have its own homepage.

eg. Community No. 1 - www.community....m/community1
OR
Community No. 2 - www.community....m/community2

curent index page vs drupal index

I currently have a live site and obviously a current live index.php page. If I install Drupal it's index.php page would overwrite my current one. Can I rename the index.php in the drupal file for the time being to something like home.php without the drupal install getting screwed up? Or should I install Drupal CMS into a sub folder and repath everything?

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.
