I have my own login module for my website and want Drupal to use sessions created by my module. Can I tweak session.inc to accept sessions created by my module(PHP Sessions)?

Hi, starting the summer i am in charge of the engineering student society website at my university.

We will be buying a new server which we will be moving the website over too and i have chosen drupal as our cms.

The main goals of the year are to
1.Set up the site so our executive members can log in and update the news on the main page without having to go through me

2.All our images are cluttered, we want to be able to make picture slide shows that our users can access ( pictures from various events we hosted)

3. Add a forum.

I am an internship student and has been given a task to build an intranet system recently. I would like to know whether drupal 4.7/5.x is able to fulfill the requirements. The company is expecting an intranet system and a website for the public (is this called extranet?) and I wonder whether drupal is able to handle this?
