Marketing Drupal & Starting a Drupal Shop

In State of Drupal at DrupalCon London Dries drew attention to the need for better marketing for Drupal.

One aspect of this could be helping people who want to move into this field. I am part of a small freelance team who started with various web dev skills in html / css / js / Java / sysadmin, and we have accumulated Drupal-specific skills over almost two years and are attempting to work more commercially, with low capital and aiming fairly low in the market. We could really use some advice on marketing, particularly as we are working at a level where customers are unlikely to have heard of Drupal.

Is there anyway to get that kind of input in the Drupal community.

Specifically we do not want to go head to head with the very cheap designers doing static or WP sites for under 500 dollards / pounds / Euros; but we do not have the resources to immediately compete with Drupal shops working on sites in the tens of thousands, or to open a physical office. So far the work we have had has come from friends based on personal contact, not on our marketing or website. Our clients have mainly started with deep ignorance of terms like web development, CMS and so on. Not knowing how and where to best present and target what we can offer is holding us back.

Heavy duty blog site for official information during a crisis

I want to make a website to spread official information during a crisis or a disaster. I want the site to be able to feed pages to appr. 100,000 visitors simultaneously.

I know that hosting and redundant internet access are important but I am also wondering If a standard Drupal installation can manage this number of visitors or if there are modifications or modules that can be used to increase performance if necessary.

Do you think Drupal will win the CMS race?

I remember reading that only two CMS (or was it three?) may win the CMS race in terms of market share. Wordpress is clearly popular on the market. Where does Drupal stand now? I had hoped that I would see it more present nowadays. One very unofficial way to gauge this is by it's related businesses. I was just looking at a theme depository and there are 23 Drupal themes and 1200+ Wordpress themes. Is the strategy for this CMS/framework now focused on a niche market?
