Jboss new portal in a box VS. Drupal

A client -- or potential client - asked me the difference between Java and PHP which was not very hard to explain even to someone who is not technical. No problem there. The next question was a bit harder and I'm not sure I answered it well.

He wanted to know why anyone would choose to go with a Java based portal like the new Jboss portal which he refereed to specifically over something like Drupal. His reasoning is that there must be a good reason or Jboss wouldn't have created the portal or something along those lines.

My best reason is that if an organization has the in house staff and resources to support a completely integrated Java application from top to bottom and that application is in place and working they are not likely to want to change technologies for their portal installation. In other words their existing technology will dictate their future direction and implementation of new applications. Or something like that anyway.

That's my best reason. I don't really know whether Java really is more scalable than PHP nor do I know whether its faster or what. I thought I used to know but no longer can say that Java is more scalable and certainly its not faster in every instance.

So what are the reasons one would go with a Java portal over a PHP -- specifically Drupal -- based portal if all things were equal -- IE. no existing infrastructure to be c

need help and suggestion plz-

hi folks.

its been quite a while since i had my last post in drupal forum. and quite sometime since my last attempt at using drupal. im just looking for some opinion or suggestion from the community if my next project is possible to implement just by using drupal alone.

i was having my hands on mambo lately and i just have to say it has come to some limitation which even the mambo community couldnt help much, unless i had a better knowledge of php, it wouldnt make that much difference now. but i have a feeling drupal is good at this kind of application and i hope yall could show me some guidelines.

first of all, would drupal be a good platform to start a directory like site? i am trying to construct something similar to http://www.training-classes.com. its a site where the community are training providers who signs up and post their services and information for users/students easily find. something like the yellowpages directory if i may say. and users can search training programmes/training providers/their location and company profile, link to their website by custom search fields.

i have not mastered the way drupal engine works but i have some basics. and i think the nodes module can do this, am i right? or not? well, i just fairly need a category and directory system and some forms for people to fill. it doesnt have to be automatic as i can compile the data and publish it on a static page/directory for the linking and stuff.

Hacker Attempt?

I woke to find this in my drupal admin logs:

How would I get traffic stats for a certain time period and keep the stats longer than the max 16 weeks?

This is compared to urchin on my older static html based websites

Buy templates?

Hello,

A friend of mine who is good in Drupal theming wants to sell some themes on-line. What do you think will be a nice price fore one theme? He suggests $5-15.

What do you think is a reasonable price for that? And will you or your friends buy some?

Convince Me (Or Not)

I'm looking to revamp my home web site. My needs are modest, but I'm a perfectionist and would like to get things right. I want a decent calendar various members of my family might contribute to, with the ability to do different views of the calendar depending on what the viewer is interested in. I want people to be able to blog if they choose. I want to have decent security to keep non-family members out of certain sections. I want things to be simple enough that non-technical family members can contribute content and understand what they're doing. I want the ability to make the site look a certain way using CSS and/or PHP code. At this point, Drupal looks like a good choice.

The following three things are my current issues and concerns:
