I'd like to have shortcuts in the administer panel but I have no idea how this could be accomplished. The reason I'd like this is because I keep forgetting about the tabs behind certain admin sections. Wouldn't it be easyier for a lot of people if there were shortcuts like this:

i would like to build a module that will need to store user variables.
i can see in the user installation file this sentence about the data field :
"Use of this field is discouraged and it will likely disappear in a future version of Drupal"
what is the best way to do ?
should i build another table with my user variables ?
I was just curious if anyone could point me into the right direction for:
1) A good Drupal book (I'm not looking to start a debate here, I just want people's opinions)... I have background in C/C++/PHP/etc
is "Leveraging Drupal: Getting Your Site Done Right" supposed to be any good? How about "Using Drupal" (the O'Reilly book)? Any other suggestions?
